    To focus on dialogue through the lens of folk traditions today, approximately 30 students and young people gathered in Supraśl from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Austria, including two guests from Denmark and the United Kingdom.

20-24 February, 2008, Poněšice, CZ

     From 20-24 February, around 35 students and young people from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Austria and the Ukraine gathered in Poněšice, near Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, for the CESR winter seminar entitled, “Together and Developing: Minority Integration and Sustainable Renewal in Central Europe.”

1-8 July, 2007, Senec, Slovakia

By the banks of the Sunny Lakes, in Senec, Slovakia, the CESR Summer seminar commenced to address current struggles of nationalism, xenophobia, and populism in Central Europe. Participants gathered from Poland, CzechRepublic, Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia to discuss the historical roots and present day manifestations of these challenges, as well as to brainstorm about ways to overcome them, both personally and in society.

The aim of the seminar is to create a welcoming forum to discuss together the leadership models of different communities, to debate the distinct characteristics of (CE) European decision-making, both those inherited from totalitarianism and those apparent in the present day. We will focus on the role and methods leadership and decision-making both within the Church and church history, as well as in society and government.

    Comparing and contrasting the Dystopian visions presented in two landmark books of the XXth century-George Orwell's 1984 and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World-the seminar will explore the various ways in which fear and the desire for security order our lives on the personal, communitarian, national and religious levels. Further, it aims to help formulate strategies for responsible risk-taking within the same contexts.

    The seminar will examine deep roots of anti-Semitism in European culture and will focus on case studies of leaders and citizens of CE countries, attempting to analyse why people made the choices they did.     Forty-eight young people gathered in the capital of Moravia to spend a week discussing the concept of “independency”—what is it and what kind of role can (or should) it play in our lives? This WSCF Central European Subregion summer seminar had participants from all five CESR countries, as well as guests from Finland, Germany/U.K., Croatia and Romania. It was especially nice to welcome WSCF Europe Chairperson Silke LECHNER and Regional Secretary Hanna TERVANOTKO for a few days.

    The seminar will focus on the phenomenon of equality of chances and will examine its application in the Central European (Visegrád) context. It will explore equality of chances from the point of view of physical disability, gender roles, minority/majority setting, etc. It will try to promote the idea of an open, equal and well-governed society that actively opposes discrimination. It will also explore the creative tension between social/national majorities and minorities.

The seminar lasts for seven days, including five working days. Each of the four countries have one day to present their culture. On the fifth day we deal with interregional cultural personalities. Countries and lecturers are invited to show their culture in a wide scale involving arts (literature, painting, music, movies, etc.), sciences and the role and situation of the various denominations. We also plan to invite national cultural centres, which are in Poland and we try to give a common lecturers with them.
